ED 800: Concepts of Educational Inquiry
Dr. Steven Weiland
This self-paced course offered insight of educational inquiry and its different goals, methods, uses, and meanings. Within each of the six units, we explored the purpose, traditions, and problems of education, as well as efforts in educational reform. The course made use of extensive multimedia resources to expand thinking. End-of-unit essays allowed for inquiry and reflection of educational philosophies.

KIN 856: Physical Bases of Coaching Athletes
Dr. Scott Riewald
This course explored principles of anatomy, biomechanics, and physiology for coaching amateur athletes in various sports. Relationships between the biological bases of coaching and physical conditioning, performance enhancement and the prevention, care, and rehabilitation of injuries were discussed. Learning resources included PowerPoint presentations, textbook readings, and quizzes. Assignments also allowed for personal application, as each assignment could be tailored to the specific sport the coach was working with. The course emphasized getting the most “bang for your buck” with each assignment and pulling out the most vital information in order to make your athletes as successful as they can be.

CEP 802: Developing Positive Attitudes Toward Learning
Dr. Evelyn Oka
This course explored the development of motivation to learn by analyzing the motivational characteristics of students and classroom. The course also promoted the development of these motivations through a repertoire of evidence-based strategies to promote students' motivation to learn. Small group work was used throughout the course, allowing for group members to share observations, insights, and strategies. In addition, we completed an individual motivation case assessment. This assignment analyzed motivation issues of a real case, developed a strategy to increase motivation, and actually implemented the strategy with the student. Outcomes of this strategy were described at the end of the course in a formal report.

EAD 860: Concepts of a Learning Society

This self-paced course explored the concept of “learning society” in historical, social, economic and cultural contexts, as well as the impact a learning society as on the individuals that work and/or live within. Each of the six units utilized different books and articles that explored various aspects and viewpoints of the learning society. The personal reflection assignments, due at the conclusion of each unit, allowed me to apply the information to my own life and learning.

KIN 854: Sport Law for Administrators and Coaches

This course prepared students for the responsibilities associated with providing and maintaining athletic programs for amateur athletes. A wide array of legal aspects was considered, including negligence, supervision, corporal punishment, contracts, termination of employees, due process, defamation, roles of independent contractors, gender equity, sexual harassment and the abuse of power, product liability, expected standards of care, waivers, essential records, transporting athletes and eligibility. Readings, PowerPoints, and journal articles were utilized, and weekly assignments focused on expanding technical and legal knowledge.

EAD 801: Leadership and Organizational Development
Dr. Deborah McFalone
The course explored leadership as the challenge of helping members of organizations learn, gain new capabilities, and reach improved outcomes. The course specifically examined the definitions of leadership and the roles of both leaders and followers. The course helped open my eyes to what the role of a leader truly is and expanded my knowledge of the capabilities leaders should have. While the course focused on educational contexts, the assignments allowed me to apply the principles to my line of work as a college cross country coach. The course utilized group work as well as independent assignments to discuss and expand understanding of the information.

This case-based course explored educational leadership from a variety of perspectives and utilized cross-disciplinary literature to address contemporary issues. We explored the meaning of leadership through readings, videos, and discussions, and worked extensively in small groups to analyze case scenarios. The course forced me to think outside of the box to solve problems, which helped further refine my personal leadership philosophy.

This course was tailored to my professional goals in collegiate cross country/track and field coaching. My goal was to find the best ways to psychologically prepare my athletes for competition. I also assessed the aspects of a positive team culture, as well as ways to handle a difficult athlete. Phone interviews were completed with various Division I coaches. Several readings and resources were also utilized. The end product was a 38-page booklet that I could use as a reference in my career.

KIN 855: Psychosocial Bases of Coaching

One of the final courses in my MAED program, this course explored the sociological, psychological, philosophical, and development principles for coaching athletes. Issues spanning childhood were discussed with particular focus on how growth and development impacts coaching. Furthermore, the course examined how sports function in society and the ways these two interact.

ED 870: Capstone Seminar
Dr. Matthew Koehler
The second course in my final semester, this capstone course provided an opportunity to reflect on my learning experiences in the MAED program, as well as develop a professional portfolio that represented my educational and work-related growth. Personal reflection and technological exploration were the foundation of this course, with peer review and feedback as the middle portion of the pyramid. The peak was an opportunity to present our work in the form of a video exhibition.
